Epsilon Tau, (or E.T. for ease) is not an us, it's just a me, all on me lonesome and just like another E.T., usually; a long way from home. Being the youngest of 4 in the sixties, with a sister 10 years my elder and brothers 6 and 4 years older, I lived in a house filled with music of many styles. My dad was a fine pianist playing both "standards" from the previous 40-plus, years, and classical piano pieces from Beethoven to Chopin and his favourite, Rachmaninov. He also did the "club circuit" for many years as a singer and was also a mean Harmonica player. If he wasn't singing around the house, he would be playing Classical music, and walking around, "Conducting" his invisible Orchestra. We all used to take the mickey out of him and the music, at the time but, strange how 40 years on we all now love it ourselves. My brothers and sister liked everything from Rock n roll, to Pop, to early R n B and Blues, and anything in between. So from the age around of six I was exposed to and got a liking for a lot of different music. It was at around 14 years old when my music tastes seemed to change and I became aware of a wealth of new and amazing bands playing music that seemed to polarise many people and their tastes. Bands such as Sabbath, Led Zep and Tull. ELP, King Crimson# (see below) and Floyd, Deep Purple and Cream. All, seemed to burst onto the scene with a diversification not seen before in music. Possibly following on from the success the Beatles were having with the innovative experiments they had developed in recent years. Rather than be blinkered and follow one musical path; - myself, along with my Cousin, (TOMBS), and mates Snak and his brother Glasshopper, took all of this music on board, along with folk artists such as Donovan, Bob Dylan and Roy Harper, and Glam Rock artists such as T.Rex, Bowie and Alice Cooper. Within a few years, I began to appreciate more and more bands and styles, some of which were even less mainstream such as Avant-Garde artists like Zappa and Captain Beefheart, Gong and Soft Machine. Also, bands like Yes, Barclay James Harvest, Caravan and Camel; Man, and the Incredible String Band. All have been soaked up by the music sponge that has become E.T. The 80's and 90's brought new tastes again as friends introduced me to Jazz, Funk, Jazz-Funk, Celtic, World, Punk, Oi, Ska, Reggae, etc, etc. and the list goes on...and on...and on. Now; with all this music in my life, and also filling up my head, you'd think there would be no room for any more in there, but no, I also had and still have lots of music of my own floating around in there too. Trouble was, that having not inherited the instrument playing skills, or singing talents of my Father, it was difficult to go anywhere with it. However, with the advent of PC's and music software; I, like many others with little or no playing skills, but with a modicum of talent can at least have a play around and use all this new "Electric Trickery", and at least get some sort of sounds laid down. Be they good or bad, sad or mad, it's my music and I get immence pleasure and fun out of doing it. Further to all this, in 2007 I ha the prviledge of spending almost a year travelling around the world, and took every opportunity I could, to see and hear local music being played. The diversity was amazing, and I feel a very lucky individual to have had the experience. I heard the music of India, Kashmir, Thailand,Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand. Also, the music of the Pacific Islands, in Fiji and Rarotonga; and finally the rich and many forms of music in the USA, Canada and Mexico. It is difficult to have such an experience and not find it has some sort of influence on the music you write. And so, with this being the case I hope, over time, to use aspects of these, many musical flavours of the world, and to add them to the recipe of my musical hotpot. Primarily though, I write for my own enjoyment, and my own satisfaction. If anyone else happens to like my sounds too, then that, for me is a wonderful bonus and; I think - really cool. # (King Crimson)-The image, at top that I am using, is a 3ft x 3ft painting I did in 1984, which is a copy of the inside cover of the 1969 album, "In The Court of the Crimson King"; by King Crimson. The original painting by Barry Godber (1946 - 1970) was on the inside cover and; was actually called "The Crimson King, the outside cover painting was called the Schitzoid man, (another track from the album). I named my interpretation of the painting "The Root of all Evil", using a slightly different background and colour scheme, plus the addition of the silver in the Kings hand. Unfortunately Barry Godber died of a heart attack around the time of the release of the album and it was to be the only painting he did. The painting was originally noticed by Peter Sinfield, the bands lyricist, but is now owned by KC's guitarist Robert Fripp after recently reclaiming it from the E.G. Record labels offices. They had it exposed to bright light risking ruining it so Frpp; "removed it". My 3x3 ft painting was; unfortunately, confiscated along with many other belongings by an irate landlord a few years after I painted it, and has not been seen since. Ce la vie. E.T. (Don)
